Our Mission

The University of Toronto Biomedical Engineering Design Team (UT BIOME) is an undergraduate, multidisciplinary, design team with two goals:

 1. To develop and implement innovative biomedical devices to address individuals and communities in need.
     2. To facilitate undergraduate student exposure to the field of biomedical engineering.

We aim to achieve these goals by choosing high-impact projects focused on the research, design, prototyping, and testing phases of product development. This provides a hands-on environment for undergraduate students to learn and apply their knowledge.

In the future, we hope to expand the club by taking on multiple projects to address medical challenges worldwide, by showcasing our work in design competitions, and by addressing problems relevant to communities in need on both a local and global health scale.

Daniel Murcia

Managing Director
Hello everyone, I'm Daniel and I decided to start UT BIOME because after 2 years of trying various design teams I found that I couldn't find the match for me. In the summer of my second year I became very interested in all aspects of biomedical engineering and health. I wanted to become involved in as many biomedical aspects as possible but for some reason UofT had no biomedical design team even though there was a lot of student interest in such a team.

My vision for the club is one where we are working directly with our community to help improve the lives of its members. Aside from this I am very passionate about mentorship in the club. With this I hope to bring on as many younger faces to help show them the amazing sides of biomedical design. I am hopeful and excited for this year to come.

Michael De Biasio

Director of Operations
Hi everyone! I'm Michael and am a third year Engineering Science Student majoring in Biomedical Systems. I am looking forward to being the Director of Operations for UT BIOME this year!

I started UT BIOME with Danny and Tim this past summer while I was doing research at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, where I gained experience in biomedical engineering projects relating to MRI technologies and a common non-invasive brain stimulation technique. My interest in biomedical engineering stems from my passion to help improve the lives of all people through an innovative approach to healthcare and medicine. This year, aside from academics and UT BIOME, I am also continuing my research at Holland Bloorview, and am involved in CUBE as VP Logistics and MEDLIFE as Vice President.

I am very excited to be a part of UT BIOME, and can't wait to continue to develop the club and see the great work our two project teams do this year. If you have any questions about the club or anything else, don't hesitate to contact me!

Timothy Samson

Director of Business and Finance
Hey! I’m Tim and I am very excited to be the Director of Business Operations and Finance at UT BIOME. I formed UT BIOME with Daniel and Michael during an internship at MedStack, a healthtech company, where I was exposed to the industry of health technology and biomedical engineering. The industry immediately fascinated me because of the wide variety of topics within it and the “helping hand” culture that exists within it.

At UT BIOME I oversee the team’s administrative, financial, and marketing efforts. When I am not studying for courses in my program Industrial Engineering, I am a business consultant for non-profit organizations with 180 Degrees Consulting and a marketing consultant for JÜV Consulting.

I am super excited for the coming years as I truly think that UT BIOME has a great opportunity to develop biomedical devices that will make a difference in the lives of their users.
